IFB Awards Plymouth County DA Funding

Susan Corcoran, an attorney from Milton, Massachusetts, was a prosecutor with Middlesex District Attorney and Norfolk District Attorney Offices before working as the Assistant District Attorney for the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office. As a prosecutor for the Plymouth County DA, Susan Corcoran also supervises other assistant district attorneys throughout the trial process.

In December 2021, the Insurance Fraud Bureau of Massachusetts (IFB) awarded the Plymouth County DA $50,000. District Attorney Timothy Cruz announced the funding would assist the office with addressing automobile insurance fraud in Brockton and throughout Plymouth County as a part of an ongoing initiative between the DA’s office and the Commissioner of Insurance.

The history behind the whole effort to address insurance fraud began in 2003 after a staged accident resulted in a fatality in Lawrence. After the accident that killed a 65-year-old woman, the IFB and the Community Insurance Fraud Initiative (CIFI) were created to address this particular issue. Comprised of specialized task forces within law enforcement from Brockton and 10 other communities, the CIFI works with the DA’s office, IFB investigators, local police, and the Attorney General to find, investigate, and prevent insurance fraud.

At the same time, District Attorney Cruz, with the DA since 2001, partnered with the IBF and Brockton Police Department in 2004. DA Cruz stated in the December 2021 press release that the funding would supplement and support the ongoing collaboration between the DA’s office and CIFI.
