An Overview of the Suffolk University

Susan Corcoran is a prosecutor for the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. While earning a Juris Doctorate from Suffolk Law School, Prosecutor Susan Corcoran served as the lead article editor of the Suffolk University Transnational Law Review.

Established in 1976, the Transnational Law Review is a professional journal that focuses on international institutions, legal events, political events, public and private international law, and developments in the global economic community. One of the oldest international law journals in the United States, the Transnational Law Review provides a forum for scholarly discussion to aid and promote the advancement of legal education and practice.

Entirely organized and operated by students, the Transnational Law Review volumes are published annually. Each volume contains three books published in the winter and summer and a symposium book with conditional publications, and features articles by respected legal scholars and staff members.

The review holds a Speaker Series during which government officials, foreign policy experts, and prominent members of the international law community gather at Suffolk University Law School to discuss foreign policy and legal issues.

St. Mary’s Center Helps Women Overcome

Prosecutor Susan Corcoran works as an assistant district attorney in Plymouth County. In addition to her work as a prosecutor, Susan Corcoran supports many nonprofit organizations, including St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children.

The goals of St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children include support, education, and motivation for women who have experienced trauma or poverty. As a natural extension of the center’s education and development program, the Women@Work training program addresses many traditional barriers to employment and self-sufficiency often found in those who have experienced abuse or poverty. The 15-week program provides tracking services like daily check-in calls and support to help participants start a career or develop their education.

The program also provides free credits transferable to various colleges, allowing participants to start their higher education. Women@Work offers classes in several stable industry sectors, including health care, financial services, real estate, and higher education services.

What Is a Motion?

An attorney and prosecutor, Susan Corcoran is an assistant district attorney with the Plymouth County District Attorney's office in Brockton, Massachusetts. As part of her work, prosecutor Susan Corcoran supervises other assistant district attorneys. One of her responsibilities involves overseeing the motions of a case.

A motion is a written request for a ruling from the court. A motion may be filed for a variety of reasons.

Motions are filed with the court to seek permission to do something or compel the other party to do something. Any party in a lawsuit may file a motion. Motions can be submitted electronically (e-filed) with the court clerk where the case is being heard, and a judge rules on them during a motion hearing. A notice of motion informs the opposing party that a motion has been filed with the court.

A motion for a continuance, for example, is a request to the court to reschedule a court date because one party may not be able to appear or may be not be prepared to proceed effectively. If the request is granted, the court will set a new court date for the party. If the opposing party refuses to answer questions during discovery or turn over documents, the party may file a motion to compel discovery. This motion asks the court to compel the other party to turn over the requested papers.
